VyStar Credit Union was at Orange Park High School on Tuesday to conduct a Reality Fair. Vystar’s Reality Fair is a fun, educational way to prepare students for their futures. Each student was given a job card and a life situation which described to them how much monthly income they will be making and whom they will have to support with it, be it a spouse, just themselves, or their children. Then, they walk around to different booths using that monthly income to purchase the necessities, such as a home, transportation and groceries, as well as other items like internet, childcare, and recreational activities. Each booth is manned with a volunteer or employee of VyStar, including the branch Vice Presidents of Orange Park and Fleming Island, who sold their items to the students. The students must keep a continuous record of items purchased, making sure they stay within the limits of their income. They are even taught how to correctly write a check at the credit union booth. After going through the fair and stopping at each booth to make their purchases, students learn how important it will be to budget their money wisely as they transition to the point of being independent.
